Adventshupferl: Aromatic Orange Crescent Cookies 🍊🍪✨
These cookies are a beloved Christmas tradition, easy to make, and perfect for sharing (or keeping all to yourself!).
Ingredients:
- 200 g (1 ½ cups + 1 tbsp) all-purpose flour
- 100 g (¾ cup + 1 tbsp) ground almonds (almond flour)
- 100 g (½ cup) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar (or ¼ tsp vanilla extract)
- Finely grated zest of 1 organic orange (about 1-2 tsp)
- Pinch of salt
- 150 g (⅔ cup) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 2 egg yolks
- For dusting: Granulated sugar mixed with vanilla sugar (or powdered sugar)
Utensils:
- Large mixing bowl
- Food processor (optional, for mixing dough)
- Baking sheets
- Parchment paper
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, ground almonds, granulated sugar, vanilla sugar, orange zest, and salt. Whisk briefly to combine.
- Add the cold butter cubes to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Alternatively, you can do this step quickly in a food processor by pulsing a few times.
- Add the egg yolks and quickly knead the mixture by hand (or pulse in the food processor) until a smooth dough forms. Be careful not to overwork the dough, as this can make the cookies tough.
- Form the dough into a disk, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or ideally overnight. This chilling step is crucial as it helps the butter firm up, making the dough easier to handle and preventing the cookies from spreading too much.
Step 2: Shape the Adventshupferl
- Preheat your oven to 170°C (340°F). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Remove the chilled dough from the refrigerator. If it’s too hard, let it sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes to soften slightly.
- Take small pieces of dough (about 10-15g each, or roughly the size of a walnut) and gently roll them between your palms to form small logs, then shape them into crescent (half-moon) shapes. They should be delicate and elegant.
- Place the shaped cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving a little space between them.
Step 3: Bake the Cookies
- Bake the Adventshupferl in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are just barely golden and the cookies are lightly colored. They should still be pale. They will be very soft when hot but will firm up as they cool.
- Remove the baking sheets from the oven.
- While the cookies are still warm (but not hot to handle), gently roll them in the prepared mixture of granulated sugar and vanilla sugar (or sifted powdered sugar). Be careful, as they are quite fragile when warm.
Step 4: Cool and Store
- Carefully transfer the sugared cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once completely cool, store the Adventshupferl in an airtight container at room temperature. They tend to develop a richer flavor after a day or two.
Enjoy these wonderful Adventshupferl during the holiday season here in Ternopil! They are a delightful treat that will fill your home with the aroma of Christmas.
